The Microsoft Windows operating system and the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser are the most commonly installed software applications of their kind. Unfortunately, the wide installation base is what attracts hackers and virus writers to target these programs more than any other operating system and browser. It is imperative that you regularly check for and apply any updates that Microsoft makes available at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

Microsoft provides a "Protect your PC" website at
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/default.aspx, which provides further news on securing your PC from known and unknown attacks. Microsoft also provides a free virus protection download located at http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/default.aspx

Secunia offers a website that allows you to view security advisories, virus information, and subscribe to a variety of security mailing lists at http://secunia.com. This website is very informative for those using Microsoft Internet Explorer, as well as those using others browsers such as Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox, or Opera.

It is imperative that you install virus protection and regularly update the virus definition files. There are many internet security software providers; following are several well-known companies that provide virus protection and software firewalls:
